So we recently went in and upgraded our internet speed from 1 Mbps down and 1 up to 20 down and 2 up, the cable bill (which includes tv and internet) went down 20 bucks, but it gets weirder after the jump.
my mom went in again, and she got the bill down by another 10 bucks, to $106 a month (still not cheap, but better than 115 channels, DVR and 1 mbps down and up) by upgrading speed to this.
PS. when we went in, they upgraded our TV package so now we have about 60 more channels than we did.
Tip. call your cable provider and ask about a better package (or preferably use Hulu or netflix).

Cable companies always have stupid pricing that doesn't make any sense.
When I moved in with my gf, she just had internet with our cable company, Charter. I had Dish at my old place, but the only spot our landlord would allow the dish to be mounted, didn't allow the dish to get a signal, so I had to cancel Dish.
When I returned my cable modem from my old place to the Charter store, they quoted me $135/month for 60 Mbps internet (their base speed) and the channel package I wanted. I had specifically told them that this would be to add tv to an existing internet-only account, but when I called customer service to sign up for tv, they said that since my gf was an existing customer, we weren't eligible for that $135/month bundle price. Of course.
But if we signed up for tv, internet and phone, it would be $133/month. The $135/month package I had been quoted, included a $12/month DVR fee, but by spending $10/month more on the phone service, the $12/month DVR fee is waived, which made for a total bill that was $2 lower.
So now we have landline phone service. Charter recycles their phone numbers, so we've been getting a lot of calls from really old people looking for some lady named Helen. We kept telling them Helen didn't have this number anymore but they kept calling. They even left voicemails saying "if this is Helen's number, please call back, thanks."
Finally I changed our voicemail greeting to say "You've reached Mike (my last name) and Jane (her last name). If you're looking for a lady named Helen, this isn't her number anymore, so please update your records. If you're looking for Mike or Jane, feel free to leave a message."
Stupid cable companies.

US Average is 32Mbps. So it's pretty good.. bang on the WA average of 34Mbps
![]() 11/19/2014 at 01:09 |

It is above the national average, so technically, yes

For what we are paying, no. In terms of downloading stuff, it's definately fine, you can download a movie in 10-15 minutes

So I'm ok?

I was just really surprised because mine is crazy compared to yours, if it's accurate.

I don't work in IT, but I'd argue you are more than OK.
Also, are you paying like a million dollars a month for that? Because God damn.

Mother-fu.... Where are you? That download is great but that upload.... (Faints) your download and especially your upload is amazing!

Just Michigan. Not going to question it.

Just remember that these are promotional prices. So while your bill is low now, keep an eye on the bill creeping up after 2-12 months.

It is really fast, but they just throttle you, no matter what you do. The ping time is excellent, usually around 3 or 4 though.

northern Idaho, the only cable provider in the area is TWC. Its a college town, and so the city installed a fiber optic ring around the city, we (stupidly) haven't signed up for it.

I think 60 Mbps is actually Charter's only speed.
![]() 11/19/2014 at 21:39 |
|
No, this is 'good' speed. $57/mo., no TV but about 60 channels since they are not encrypted.

Why is the upload speed so low? Usually my upload speed beats my download.

Damn! I get 50Mbps for $40 with comcast. They bundled TV with it except I don't watch TV. I'd love to swap out the TV package for another 75Mbps but they won't let me.

I have not seen a connection with upload faster than download. Might see that with a symmetric connection due to traffic issues, but otherwise I am unfamiliar with a situation like that.
